Leather Products

No material is entirely immune to damage, and leather is no exception.  While more durable than other textiles, it still needs to be properly cared for.  What separates it from other cloth is its reputation as being trendy, stylish, and sheik.  That’s what you made the investment when purchasing it in the first place.  Therefore, don’t neglect getting it cleaned periodically, and when the time comes, restore it.

Leather Damage Causes

We at Technique Leather want your leather items to continue to dazzle for years to come.  Maintenance is one component, but avoiding damage to begin with is important too.  Follow these tips to show your leather the care it deserves.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight

Chronic or long-term exposure to direct sun substantially harms leather products.  Most frequently, the damage will come in the form of discoloration or fading.  Avoid keeping leather directly in front of windows or in cars for extended periods.  Move furniture from parts of the room that get the most sun.  If your car seats are leather, try to park in garages or shaded areas.

  • Temperature changes

Extreme temperatures at both ends of the spectrum can damage leather too.  Don’t store items where there isn’t reasonable temperature control.  Attics, garages, and outdoor storage facilities are all examples.  Garage parking however, is the best way to protect your seats.

  • Stain Treatment

Spills are going to happen at some point.  Wine, juice, ink…something is eventually going to spill, splatter, or drip onto your leather.  The key is treating the stain as soon as possible.  Failure to do so may cause the stain to set permanently. Keep a leather restoration set handy at home, your car, or your office, wherever you have leather.  Make sure you use the proper cleaners

  • Use proper cleaners

We just said that!  Yes, because it’s that important,  Use only cleaners specifically designed for cleaning leather to treat your items.  Using any detergent or soap and you can further tarnish your leather, by drying it out, cracking it or making the stain worse.  A good practice is to test any product on an inconspicuous part of the garment or furniture first.

  • Heat

Not only is sunlight bad for leather, but excessive heat is too. Be cognizant of where your heating vents or radiators are relative to your leather items.  Try to put some space between them, so they get saturated with too much heat or hot air.  The leather will dry out and look worn long before it should.

Fixing leather

Not every situation calls for professional cleaning (as happy as we are to help).  Some basic maintenance and cleaning can be done at home, following these simple suggestions.

  • Leather Cleaners

We can’t emphasize enough.  Make sure the cleaner you’re using is intended to treat leather.  Stay away from all-purpose cleaners and read the instructions carefully to make sure the proper application method and amount of cleaner is being used.   Keep in mind, most of these cleaners are surface cleaners only.  They’ll do a respectable job of removing oil, dirt and grime, but aren’t intended for deep cleaning.

  • Leather Restoration Kit

To achieve that goal, you’ll need to invest in a quality leather restoration kit.  This will likely include several tools or applicators, some creams, polishes, and maybe dyes.  These kits are great when your leather is looking dull or worn and you want some shine back. They’ll help infuse some moisture back into the material and give some added protection to future damage.   The process can be a little labor intensive, so don’t expect results immediately, especially if it’s your first time.

  • Olive or Baby Oil

One little known trick for handling minor scratches or small tears is using a small amount of olive oil or baby oil. Really, we’re not kidding.  Rub in a small amount with a cotton ball and let it dry for an hour, then see if it looks any better.  It might take a second application to work. It usually does the job temporarily, at least until a more complete restoration or repair can be done.

If you’ve tried these ideas, and it didn’t take or you just don’t have the time to begin with,  Technique Leather has your back.  Call us today!  Your leather products will be in good hands with the best in the business.

Advantages of professional leather help

Before we debate the pros of hiring us to clean and restore your leather, as opposed to doing it yourself, let’s take a minute to consider the number one con of DIY work.  You run the risk of ruining something you really love.  Here are a few more points worth thinking about.

  1. Cost – The cost savings of DIY work are certainly enticing, as is the satisfaction of a job well done. When those DIY jobs don’t go as planned however, you’ve inadvertently added to the costs.  You still have the cost of paying us, but also the cost incurred in trying to do it yourself originally.  Not only that, but if you accidentally caused more damage through your efforts, the cost for us to repair the item might be higher.
  2. Time – Depending on the size of your item and the amount of work to be done, this may not be a quick task.  Few people in this busy world have the time to carve out and spend on leather restoration.  Our technicians at Technique Leather do this all day, every day and not only can perform the work quickly, but with the requisite care and attention.
  3. Results – If we’re talking about some of your most prized possessions, results really do matter.  Do you want your trusted jacket to just look ok, or do you want it to look awesome?  Do you want your house guest to say, “Oh, I see you cleaned your couch” or “Wow, you bought a new couch?  It looks just like your old one.”  That’s the difference a professional can make.
